Why choose Cenegi for cybersecurity?
We get asked this a lot, so I’ll answer it by walking through two real situations we handle all the time:
- You’ve been attacked and you need help right now.
- You haven’t been hit yet (or you think you haven’t), and you want to lock things down before it happens.
Situation 1: You’re under attack
Common cases we see:
- Account takeover
- Business email compromise (attacker logs into someone’s mailbox and messages customers)
- Ransomware spreading through the network
- Insider abuse / data exfiltration
There are others, but those four show up over and over.
When you call us during an active incident, our workflow looks like this:
Step 1. Stop the bleeding.
We contain the threat. That can mean isolating infected machines so ransomware can’t keep encrypting systems, killing malicious sessions, disabling compromised accounts, and cutting off the attacker’s access so the situation doesn’t get worse.
Step 2. Start the record.
We immediately begin documenting what happened. We collect logs, screenshots, forensic artifacts, mailbox rules, sign-in history, and other evidence.
We structure this in a way that can stand up if legal, insurance, or regulators get involved later. It’s factual and traceable — not guesswork.
Step 3. Kick them out everywhere.
Attackers almost always leave themselves a way back in.
Examples: hidden inbox forwarding rules, persistence on another machine, extra local admin accounts, malicious OAuth apps, etc.
We look for those “back doors,” remove them, and harden the environment so they can’t just re-enter after you think it’s “fixed.”
Step 4. Stabilize and hand you a path forward.
Once we’re confident the attacker is out and the environment isn’t still bleeding, we finalize an incident summary.
You get:
- What happened
- What data/systems were touched
- What we did
- What has to happen next (MFA, logging, backups, policy fixes, etc.)
If you want us to actually make those changes for you (turn on MFA everywhere, enable logging, fix forwarding rules, tighten access, etc.), we can do that too.
That’s the “you’re being attacked right now” lane.
Situation 2: You’re trying to prevent it in the first place
If you’re not actively compromised (or you’re not sure), this is the proactive side. Think of this as building a security baseline so you’re not living on luck.
Here’s how we approach a new security engagement:
Step 1. Find the weaknesses.
We run a security assessment and, if needed, a penetration test.
That covers external exposure, internal exposure (VPN/on-site), and common cloud issues like weak Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace tenant settings.
Goal: show you where you’re actually vulnerable — not in theory, but how someone could realistically get in.
Step 2. Lock down the basics.
We harden the environment:
- Anti-virus / EDR
- MFA
- Password/security policy
- Centralized logging so activity is actually visible
- Backups that can be restored quickly (not just “some drive somewhere”)
- Email security / phishing protection
This is the “close the doors and windows” phase.
Step 3. Put eyes on it.
After hardening, we stand up ongoing monitoring — on your network (intrusion detection) and/or in your cloud accounts.
This is how we catch weird activity early instead of finding out after money leaves the account or files are encrypted.
Step 4. Keep you updated.
You get recurring reporting: what was seen, what was blocked, what changed, and what we’re improving next.
That gives you proof for insurance, leadership, auditors, boards, etc. You’re not just hoping anymore — you can actually show progress.
So why Cenegi?
Because we do both sides:
- Response: If you’re already in trouble, we come in, stop it, document it in a defensible way, and get you stable with recommendations you can act on immediately.
- Defense: If you’re not in trouble yet (or you don’t want Round Two), we harden, monitor, test, and report so you’re not gambling your business on luck and good intentions.
Most companies either sell you a tool and walk away, or they only show up after you’ve been wrecked. We stay through both.
What happens next?
If you’re dealing with something active (account takeover, ransomware, suspicious activity, wire fraud attempts, weird mailbox rules), contact us and just say “incident.” We’ll start under a defined not-to-exceed block so you’re protected on cost and we can begin triage immediately.
If you want testing / prevention (security assessment, penetration test, tenant hardening, ongoing monitoring), reach out and we’ll send you:
- A sanitized sample of the kind of report we deliver
- A short not-to-exceed estimate you can share with leadership, insurance, or your MSP
